Smart Connections at Carl F Groupco

When it comes to connections, hardware distributor Carl F Groupco has strong partner relations which form the backbone of the organisation. Relationships with leading manufacturers play a pivotal role in the company’s service commitment and the ongoing advancement of its comprehensive catalogue.

Two leading industry names who are partners of Carl F Groupco, and whose technology supports the company’s SmartSecure electronic door locking and access control brand, are FUHR and Yale – their roles in the development of the hardware distributor’s Smart tech innovation are detailed in this report.

FUHR

The collaboration between Carl F Groupco and FUHR dates back to 1962 and the fittings supplier is not only the stockist of the largest FUHR range in the UK but it is also the German lock manufacturer’s biggest single customer worldwide.

FUHR’s multitronic 881 fully motorised multipoint lock was the ideal option for SmartSecure. The lock’s intelligent technology, combined with a modular construction, means the versatile system is ideal for the SmartSecure range which includes the Smart phone/tablet based SmartConnect app; the innovative SmartTouch sensor variant which can be concealed into a pull handle and the brand’s radio-based access control system.

With secure locking every time the door is closed, the impressive security features of FUHR’s 881 lock are highlighted by Carl F Groupco. Addressing research that suggests a number of break-ins are through unlocked doors, an alarm signals any issues with lock engagement. The SmartConnect app offers the ability to monitor the status of the door, only when the door is closed and locking points engaged does the system report a secure door.

A recent Smart tech advancement by FUHR means that UK SmartSecure customers can now use Alexa-enabled devices, such as Amazon Echo, to control the SmartConnect app functions.
Carl F Groupco’s Managing Director John Crittenden expanded on the significance of the company’s relationship with FUHR:

“We have grown with FUHR to increase our offer from standard mechanical locks to the fully motorised 881 multipoint lock. FUHR is an important partner to us for a number of reasons including product quality, innovation and service commitment. A shared ethos in working practises and open lines of communication, such as the relationship we have with FUHR, are key to the success of our partnerships.”

Yale

In 2017, Carl F Groupco added Yale’s Conexis L1 Smart Keyless Locking Handle to its SmartSecure offer. Ideally suited for retrofit installations, the addition to the company’s portfolio enhanced the company’s range of Smart options and increased its Smart Tech offer. New markets for SmartSecure were opened up as any 92mm PZ door lock can easily be upgraded to incorporate the system, whether a retrofit or new door.

In July this year, the relationship was further cemented when Carl F Groupco partnered with Yale to supply the leading lock manufacturer’s full product range. It was a strategic move enabling a close working relationship with Yale that will facilitate the introduction of new products, future product development and testing to ensure continued advancements for customers.

A Partnership Philosophy

Carl F Groupco reports that partnerships, such as the relationships it has with FUHR and Yale, are central to its service philosophy as they facilitate product advancements, enable considered product sourcing to provide tailored packages for customers, support testing initiatives and provide a fast track to comprehensive product support.

The synergies between the hardware distributor and the manufacturers that contribute to its range of over 7,000 product lines ensure a strong focus on quality and innovation – two key attributes that have been significant in the success of SmartSecure.

A Consultancy Service from Carl F Groupco

With a history spanning over half a century, Carl F Groupco understands that to succeed and expand in the UK’s hardware sector, it is essential to be professional in business services and proactive in product development while prioritising customer relations above everything else. In this article for Glass and Glazing Products magazine, Managing Director John Crittenden expands on this philosophy explaining the importance of providing a consultancy service and describing what this means in practical terms:

“It would be easy to assume that, as fittings suppliers, we are just ‘box shifters’ with a website, catalogue and a call centre but the reality is far from that. Of course, ‘box shifting’ is part of what we do, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg – we work with our customers to source products to fit their specification requirements, we advise on relevant standards, we assist manufacturers in development & testing and we pride ourselves on our On Time In Full delivery promise. In short, we position ourselves as consultancy partners for our customers.

With one of the largest ranges of big brand hardware names, we hold over £3 million of stock and over 1.95 million components for next day delivery. With distribution centres located in Peterborough and Cumbernauld, we operate on a national scale also supplying Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

We believe in providing tailored packages and we back this ethos with a catalogue of over 7,000 lines from leading manufacturers: this enables us to select from a huge pool of products to precisely meet our customers’ needs.

Within our door hardware category we offer lock solutions for standard residential, timber, composite, French, bi-fold, patio and electronic doors. We also provide door handles, cylinders and hinges plus emergency escape solutions, security add-ons and door furniture. Additionally, our own brand SmartSecure suite of solutions addresses demand for new generation electronic door locking and access control.

Catering for all window hardware requirements, we distribute locks, handles, stays and hinges along with remote window control systems, tilt & turn solutions, reversible gearing and security add-ons. To ensure a comprehensive selection, our catalogue extends to ventilation products, consumables and tools to relieve the burden of sourcing from multiple suppliers.

A Complementary Catalogue:

Every line in our catalogue is carefully sourced to complement other products; this enables us to provide packages to meet testing requirements, for example PAS 24. Of course, presenting the details of all these products and ensuring our staff are knowledgeable of all our lines is a challenge, but it is something that we rise to extremely well as an organisation. Our in-house sales staff are all trained to a high level in our hardware and this team supports our external Regional Sales Managers who are also highly educated in our product ranges. This means you have conversations with people who are experts in our lines, they know the questions to ask and they are able to tailor a solution to meet your precise needs.

Technical support is an important element of our consultancy service and throughout our history we have invested in going the extra mile regarding advice and assistance for our customers. This ethos is endorsed by Trombé, specialists in architectural design, structural glazing and extensions. Trombé selected us as a supply partner and have incorporated SmartSecure into their minimal frame sliding door system which required changing the usual fitting process to maintain the aesthetics of their profile. They were particularly impressed by the willingness of our technical team to provide guidance at every step of the process.

Offering expertise in standards and legislation is another area that positions us as consultancy service providers. We take the pain out of hardware purchasing and, as part of this philosophy, we ensure our products meet local standards: Glazpart’s 5000EQA is an excellent example as it supports The Building (Scotland) Regulations, which increased the required ventilation (EQA) for habitable rooms.

We also ensure that we understand the standards that impact hardware and we share this knowledge. One particularly significant development has been Document Q and continuing enhancements to security testing – for the benefit of our customers we have ensured that we are au fait with its implications on the UK’s hardware market.

Our main objective at Carl F Groupco is to set ourselves apart with the evolution of our catalogue to provide what is probably the UK’s widest range of high quality window and door hardware components. Equally important are our service and systems – yes these are an overhead and yes, it means constant training and investment, but we believe these are essential to differentiating our offer and supporting our remit of providing comprehensive consultancy support.”

Getting Smarter in the Hardware Sector

Smart tech is a burgeoning market and, in the history of the UK’s hardware sector, this is one of the most exciting opportunities presented to installers to be at the forefront of a technology evolution. In this article for Total Installer magazine, Carl F Groupco’s Managing Director John Crittenden looks at the growth of Smart solutions and the appeal of SmartSecure, the company’s electronic door locking and access control brand.

“Before looking at market expansion, it is useful to define SmartSecure, which is the most pioneering product initiative and biggest development investment we have undertaken in our 50+ years of trading. SmartSecure is a suite of solutions based on the FUHR multitronic 881 door lock kit.

The electromechanical multipoint locking system, with integrated panic function, is suitable for aluminium, timber, composite or PVCu main entrance doors in residential and non-residential properties. SmartSecure access control options include SmartConnect designed for easy door opening using a Smartphone and SmartTouch, which operates like Smart car technology – all that is needed is a small transponder in the vicinity of the door. Radio-based access control systems are also available including a radio keypad, transponder and fingerprint scanner for keyless biometric access control.

Since launching SmartSecure in 2016, we can report widespread adoption across a range of sectors including the fabrication market, social housing / Housing Associations and high end residential clients who recognise benefits across different access control applications.

In just three years since the launch of SmartSecure, we have witnessed a significant shift in the perception of electronic locking and Smart access control. As we adopt Smart technology in other areas of our homes with lights, heating and cameras, Smart door locks are becoming increasingly accessible. The expansion of the Smart sector is clear and this is supported by YouGov research which, in a Smart Homes 2018 report, indicated that close to a quarter of Britons (23%) own one or more Smart home devices (excluding Smart meters), while one in ten (8%) now have two or more, underlining the growth in the industry.

Supporting the trend towards Smart tech, Trombé, specialists in architectural design, structural glazing and extensions for high-end contemporary residential and commercial projects, has incorporated
SmartSecure technology into its minimal frame sliding door system. Flexibility of the SmartSecure solution was a major benefit to Trombé – the ability to fit the lock into the frame and the keep onto the sash meant the aesthetics of the slim frame design weren’t compromised.

There are a number of compelling reasons for installers to embrace the changing tide towards Smart tech and champion the new solutions. SmartSecure’s simplicity of use and flexibility of installation has considerable appeal. Security and control advantages are also provided to the user – the capability of only permitting entry to authorised personnel, and the freedom to provide access ‘keys’, is extremely empowering.

The Smart Set

Additionally, the incorporation of brand leader technology into the suite of SmartSecure solutions is very compelling. A Smart tech advancement by FUHR means that customers can now use Alexa-enabled devices, such as Amazon Echo, to control SmartConnect app functions.

It’s incredible that, when we launched SmartSecure in 2016, we talked about being able to use an app to monitor your door and provide access keys. Now you don’t even need to log into the app – you can talk to Amazon Alexa. Because Alexa lives in the cloud it’s always getting smarter which means new capabilities are always being delivered to your device. Using Alexa with SmartConnect is simple and hands-free – just ask, and Alexa will respond instantly.

The Smart market is a major opportunity for everyone working in the hardware industry. With wider adoption we will all benefit from sector growth and installers have an important part to play in the evolution to new generation locking solutions. We can assure readers that the fitting process is straightforward and we are on hand to help – our technically qualified advisors are trained to provide advice on all aspects of SmartSecure and to assist with any installation questions.”

Spotlighting Specialist Hardware: A report from Carl F Groupco

As one of the UK industry’s longest trading hardware suppliers, Carl F Groupco understands the importance of specialist products. Offering expertise in this area means customers are assisted in the expansion of their businesses into different application areas: the value of their offer is increased and potential new revenue streams are opened up. In this report by Marketing Manager Clare White, focus is placed on the door hardware that plays a key role in the company’s comprehensive catalogue of over 7,000 product lines.

“No article on specialist hardware would be complete without mention of SmartSecure, our pioneering solution for electronic door locking and access control. When launching the brand back in 2016 our research predicted that Smart locking technology was on the cusp of taking off and, given the adoption of SmartSecure products and the buzz that Smart solutions are creating, it’s fair to say that time has come.

At the heart of the SmartSecure solution is the FUHR 881 electromechanical multipoint lock which incorporates Smart access control options plus automatic motorised locking and unlocking. A retrofit route can be taken using Yale’s Conexis Smart locking handle, with a Smartphone replacing the traditional key.

With speciality areas, such as Smart tech, there can be a preconception that it will be complicated to sell and install but this is not the case with SmartSecure – working in partnership with FUHR, we have combined latest technology with simplicity. Practical installation advice for this specialist solution is essential and we place considerable focus on technical support – this has led to significant growth across the aspirational domestic market , the commercial sector and social housing / Housing Association installations.

Additionally, we are witnessing a significant shift towards adoption of automatic door locking, with a noticeable increase in enquiries for the FUHR 833 automatic door lock which has achieved PAS 24 and Secured by Design accreditation. This multipoint device offers automatic locking functionality to protect from unauthorised access from the moment the door is closed. The lock also helps prevent warping, particularly for composite doors, as all locking points engage which hold the door in place every time it is closed without the home owner having to lift a lever. On closing, latches become solid deadbolts throwing 20mm into the frame to provide security against forced entry. A simple key turn secures the interior lever and main deadbolt making the lock ‘child proof’.

We also place fittings for stable doors under the heading of speciality products as these are supplied for non-standard, single residential doors. Again sourced from FUHR, our stable door gearing comprises two locking mechanisms which operate independently or in tandem. The gearing, which has featured in our catalogue for over a decade, incorporates seven locking points for security and offers excellent ventilation. PVCu, timber/composite and non-standard tall door variants are available. Our sales of FUHR’s stable door locks have increased by 13% in the last 12 months, which confirms growth in demand.

Emergency exit and panic door hardware is also treated as a specialist area as the hardware specified is required to meet building regulations and ensure compliancy for installation. We offer an extensive range of panic and emergency exit gearing which address stringent safety standards for public and commercial installations meeting the EN 179 and EN 1125 standards. Products include the FUHR 870 and 871 Type 8 Emergency Exit locks for aluminium, PVCu or timber doors. The multitronic 881 also sits under the banner of emergency exit hardware with its fully motorised multipoint locking system that provides a panic function for single and double-leaf emergency exits. Additionally, we distribute facefix Strand Antipanic gearing: products offered are modular touch bar, push bar and push pad variants which can all be combined with outside access using a lever or knob handle device.

As a hardware distributor, it would be easy to fight shy of specialist products because of the additional tailoring that is required and the need to provide comprehensive and responsive technical support. But these are areas where Carl F Groupco has a strong reputation – we take great pride in providing a personalised, full service. As a result, relationships are enhanced and trust is built – with our comprehensive hardware catalogue and fully trained staff, we are able to assist with product selection for any project.”

Yale’s Lockmaster 21 Launch Supported by Carl F Groupco

Carl F Groupco is proud to announce the addition of Yale’s new Lockmaster 21 to the range of lock solutions featured in its hardware catalogue of over 7,000 product lines. Celebrating 21 years since the launch of the Lockmaster, the new product is Yale’s latest advancement to its established Lockmaster multipoint door lock range.

Commenting on key design features of the Lockmaster 21, Carl F Groupco’s Sales Director John King said:

“We are delighted to play a supporting role in the launch of the Lockmaster 21 and to offer this innovative product with its enhanced security and durability features to our customers.

“The Lockmaster’s signature hook and pin unit has been positioned within 100mm of the pre-compression rollers which aids security testing. Additionally, the centre case has been strengthened to protect against the latest break in methods and pre-compression rollers engage slightly ahead of the security locking points to ensure smooth engagement and reliable locking.

“The faceplate of the door lock is manufactured from 430 grade stainless steel which improves durability and aesthetics while enabling Yale to improve their manufacturing process and reduce the carbon footprint. One piece keep enhancements, including screw-in hardened plastic buckets, improve longevity and a 13mm axis with profile related packers ensures a perfect fit and greater loads during security testing.”

As with all Lockmaster door locks, the new product is British built including metal pressing, die casting, injection moulding and assembly which are all carried out at Yale’s UK headquarters.

Full details of the Lockmaster 21 can be provided by hardware distributor, Carl F Groupco.

“The Yale brand has instant consumer recognition along with excellent product and security guarantees. This is a great fit with the Carl F Groupco philosophy of supplying secure fittings backed by strong warranties that our customers can trust. We really like the fact that Yale products are designed for the UK market and the majority are developed and manufactured in Britain, which resonates with many of our customers and supports our On Time in Full delivery ethos.”

Confirming the significance of Carl F Groupco supplying the full Yale range, Paul Atkinson Sales & Marketing Director for Yale said:

“We are delighted to welcome Carl F Groupco as a major stockist of Yale Hardware. The relationship has been strong for many years with Carl F Groupco stocking Defender Friction stays and various Yale ranges, however with our most recent acquisition of Trojan Hardware the relationship has become much closer and more strategic. This development means that Carl F Groupco has the ability to sell the full Yale range with full utilisation of our guarantees and brand.”

As the oldest lock brand, Yale is one of the best-known and most respected names in the lock industry.

Carl F Groupco also has a strong provenance with a trading history dating back over fifty years, partnering with leading hardware manufacturers such as Cotswold, FUHR, Glazpart, Greenwood, Hoppe, Kenrick, MACO, Roto, Strand, Siegenia and now Yale.

Carl F Groupco Reduces Carbon Footprint

LED lighting has been installed across Carl F Groupco’s Peterborough warehouse, along with motion sensors that will further increase energy savings. The advancement is the latest initiative by the hardware distributor to minimise impact on the environment. At the hub of Carl F Groupco’s business, working to meet the company’s On Time In Full delivery ethos supplying over 7,000 product lines, the warehouse was identified as a key area to enhance environmental efficiency.

Representing an investment of over £20,000, the hardware distributor’s environmental initiative has been supported by an EU Energy Efficiency grant which was achieved with assistance from the Business Energy Efficiency Cambridge and Peterborough Programme.

The new warehouse lighting will reduce the company’s CO2 from 34.84 tonnes to 6.92 tonnes per annum: this represents a saving of 27.91 CO2 (tonnes) or a saving of 68,156kWh, based on Energy Performance Assessment (EPA) data this is equivalent to the energy required to charge over six million Smart phones.

Key Questions for SmartSecure

In this article for Total Installer, John Mitchell, Technical Manager for Carl F Groupco answers questions about the company’s SmartSecure electronic locking and access control brand.

John Mitchell

Q: SmartSecure was at the forefront of Smart Tech for the hardware industry when it was launched in 2016, why did you take this initiative?
A: SmartSecure has been the most significant development in Carl F Groupco’s 50+ year history. Designed to support the emerging electronic locking and Smart access control market, the initiative – which drew on our heritage in the hardware distribution market – positioned us as a lead brand for new generation Smart solutions. It was a significant opportunity and, by spearheading SmartSecure, we established Carl F Groupco as front runners for Smart Tech in the fenestration market.

As a technology led, service focussed organisation we were ideally placed to take Smart locking forward. We also have a long-standing partnership with the German lock manufacturer FUHR and this was central to the introduction of SmartSecure. At the heart of the solution is the FUHR 881 electronically operated, multipoint lock endorsed by Secured by Design: this offers Smart access options plus automatic motorised locking and unlocking. A retrofit route can also be taken using Yale’s Smart locking handle where a Smartphone replaces the traditional key – the door’s existing design features remain intact and mobile keys, distributed via an app, provide access as required.

Q: What are the SmartSecure variants?
A: SmartConnect: Designed for easy door opening using a Smartphone, this intelligent, WLAN-based system offers keyless operation and monitoring. Management of multiple users and allocation of specific entry times is enabled. The system also logs an audit trail reporting on who accesses the property.
SmartTouch: Activated by movement and operating just like Smart car technology, all that is needed is a small transponder in the vicinity of the door. Fitted into a sensor or pull handle, access control is hidden with this discrete and stylish solution.
Other options: Radio-based access control systems are also available including a radio keypad, transponder and fingerprint scanner for keyless biometric access control.

Q: How easy is it to fit SmartSecure?
A: All SmartSecure variants are straightforward to install. The product looks good and, because it is easy to fit, it has ‘clean’ design lines… it also offers practical advantages of access control. Taking SmartConnect for example, no cables are required and a user-friendly app controls a door from any location. With the Yale Conexis Smart Keyless Locking Handle any 92mm PZ door lock can readily be upgraded to incorporate the system, whether retrofit or new door. A number of access control methods can be used including key cards, key tags, phone tags and an app.

Q: Who is using SmartSecure?
A: There is significant demand from the aspirational domestic sector through to social housing and Housing Associations. Smart Tech, which provides convenience in the domestic market, is ever increasing and this growth trend is reflected across other sectors. As awareness increases, fabricators and installers are more willing to adopt the new technology and differentiate their offer.

Q: How do you address home-owners’ preconceptions regarding Smart Tech?
A: There can be a preconception that Smart tech will be complicated and not intuitive to use. This is a misconception… if someone is looking for state-of-the-art electronic door locking and access control to upgrade their home, SmartSecure combines style with simplicity. For anyone that has mastered their car’s automatic ignition or keyless entry, this is no more complicated. Security can be another query, but there is complete peace of mind with the monitoring features and control of ‘keys’ for both the full multipoint and Yale handle options, both solutions are also supported by PAS 24 accreditation.

Q: Why is it important to buy Smart Tech from an established supplier?
A: As with any technology purchase you need to buy from a reputable organisation with an established history – you want to be sure the company will be there to provide support as your system evolves. You also need a technically competent supplier that offers comprehensive, practical and accessible support.

Automatic FUHR Lock is High Flyer for Carl F Groupco

Carl F Groupco and FUHRHardware distributor Carl F Groupco’s collaboration with German lock manufacturer FUHR dates back to 1962 and FUHR products consistently feature in the company’s best seller list. With a 13% increase in sales in the trading year 2018-2019, a current top performer is the FUHR multisafe 833 automatic door lock.

Described by lock supply specialists Carl F Groupco as a reliable multipoint device, the 833 offers automatic locking functionality to protect from unauthorised access from the moment the door is closed. The lock also helps prevent warping, particularly for composite doors, by locking all points to hold the door in place every time the door closes, as opposed to relying on the home owner to lift a lever.

Ideally designed for easy, secure operation, the door automatically locks on closing and is easily unlocked from inside the property by using a lever handle. On closing the door, latches become solid deadbolts throwing 20mm into the frame to provide security against forced entry. Additionally, a simple key turn secures the interior lever and main door bolt making the lock ‘child proof ’. The door lock has achieved PAS 24 and is Secured by Design accredited.

Carl F Groupco advises that the range of features offered by the FUHR multisafe 833 make the product an attractive and compelling choice of lock as ease of use and security are combined for aluminium, composite, PVCu or timber entrance doors of residential or public buildings.

The FUHR 881 complements all SmartSecure access control options including fingerprint, keypad and remote smart phone operation. The 881 can be fully integrated with alarms, building management systems and access control.

Security and Safety

As well as being renowned for innovation, FUHR has a long history of providing quality products that meet stringent security requirements: the multisafe 856 Type 3 PAS 24 and Secured by Design lever operated door lock for single hinged and French residential doors is a firm favourite with Carl F Groupco’s customers.
Safety issues are also addressed with an emergency exit and panic door hardware range for PVC, timber and aluminium profiles.

Carl F Groupco’s Record Roto Results

Record results for Roto products have been announced by Carl F Groupco. The hardware distributor reports that March 2019 was its best ever monthly sales for the range, with an 87% increase compared to March 2018. Figures over the last financial year are also extremely positive with sales of Roto products up by 90%.

Julie Warner , PN Manager

Carl F Groupco attributes the success to a number of factors: the company credits the quality and innovation of the products and the skills of its sales team. Additionally, product ranges have increased including the Roto TSL Espagnolette with full Roto Twin-Cam Security Lock for casement and reversible windows. The Roto NT tilt and turn range has also been added to Carl F Groupco’s catalogue.

Commenting on the landmark sales achievement, Carl F Groupco’s Managing Director John Crittenden said:

“We have an excellent team at Carl F Groupco that supports Roto. Product Manager Julie Warner has long-standing experience of the Roto range and she is supported across the company by our hard-working sales, technical, marketing and distribution departments.

“With the current uncertainty that the market is experiencing, these exceptional results are tribute to the calibre of the product and our workforce across all divisions.”

Carl F Groupco is sole distributor of PN hardware by Roto in the UK and commends the brand for its durability, quality, functionality and innovation. The ever popular PN reversible hardware is an established line for Carl F Groupco which the company has distributed for 18 years, and which continues to be the market leader for reversible windows.

Lock, stock and barrel

In this article for Glass Times, John Mitchell, the company’s Technical Manager provides an overview of automatic technology, Smart systems and emergency exit hardware.

“Locking technology has always been the backbone of the hardware range that we distribute and, as part of our catalogue of over 7,000 product lines, we cater for the door lock requirements of aluminium, composite, PVC and timber profiles. Included in our door hardware range is multi-point locking for single residential doors plus Stable, French, Bi-Fold, Patio and Electronic products. Emergency Escape solutions also feature in our offer. More recently, with the introduction of Smart Tech, access control solutions have come to the fore.

John Mitchell

After launching our electronic locking and access control brand SmartSecure in 2016 we successfully cemented our position as lock innovators and technical experts. We are now in the roll out phase of first installations with strong interest being shown across all sectors from architectural, design led projects through to extensive social housing schemes.

Smart Solutions
Trombé, for example – specialists in architectural design, structural glazing and extensions for high-end contemporary residential and commercial projects, has incorporated our SmartSecure electronic locking and advanced access technology into its minimal frame sliding door system. Designed and manufactured by Trombé, the aluminium door system’s slim styling and sophisticated aesthetics are complemented by the new generation control features offered by SmartSecure.

In addition to solutions based on FUHR’s fully motorised multipoint 881 lock with automatic locking, our SmartSecure range was increased earlier this year to include Yale’s Conexis L1 retro-fit Smart keyless locking handle which is ideal as an upgrade for existing customers or DIY solution.

Automatic and Emergency Exit Products
We are witnessing a significant shift towards the adoption of motorised and automatic function door locking. There has been a noticeble increase in enquiries for the FUHR 833 lock which engages all locking points on closing the door to provide instant security, only requiring the operation of the cylinder to throw the deadbolt. Not only is the security advantage a lure for fabricators and end users, the lock also helps to prevent door warping by holding the door in place rather than relying on the user to lift levers.

And, as important as it is to provide secure locking technology, it is equally necessary to facilitate an easy, reliable exit. We offer FUHR 870 and 871 Type 8 emergency exit locks for aluminium, PVCu or timber doors plus FUHR’s CE marked panic locks which provide electronic, automatic or manual locking options. Other products that we distribute include facefix Strand Antipanic gearing: the EN 1125 Motorised or Modular Touch Bar, the EN 1125 Modular Push Bar, the EN 179 Modular Push Pad and a lever or knob operated Outside Access device.
Again, we believe in going the extra mile offering advice and technical support on how best to achieve panic or emergency exit doors. One of the first considerations is establishing where the door set is to be fitted and who will use it as this will enable us to advise what hardware is most appropriate to meet relevant regulations. For example, non-public buildings where full door operation training has been given to users requires hardware that meets the EN 179 standard for emergency exits. However, if the door is to be installed in premises such as commercial or public buildings where occupants may not be familiar with the exit routes and hardware devices then the EN 1125 standard will need to be met for panic exit.”

Business Support Strengthened at Carl F Groupco

New assistants have been appointed for Carl F Groupco’s Marketing and IT departments. The company’s latest recruits join the hardware distributor to support its focus on innovation, communication and service.

Charlotte Edwards, Marketing Assistant and Joshua Agger, IT Support Technician

Charlotte Edwards takes the post of Marketing Assistant, reporting to Marketing Manager Clare White: previous posts for Charlotte have included Digital Content Assistant. Joshua Agger reports Steve Lamb, Carl F Groupco’s head of IT: he takes the role of IT Support Technician which is the role he fulfilled at his last company.

Charlotte will assist in Marketing functions including advertising, PR, social media and online promotion for the company’s extensive hardware range. Current focus includes publicity for SmartSecure, the Smart locking and access control innovation pioneered by Carl F Groupco in 2016 which put the company at the forefront of Smart tech solutions.

The support role for Joshua will include assisting colleagues with their IT requirements and contributing to the development of programmes such as Carl F Groupco’s established CRM and MRP systems that enable the company to maintain its stringent service levels.

Going the Extra Mile

In this report for WindowsActive, John Crittenden, Managing Director of Carl F Groupco explains how the distributor’s services extend significantly beyond merely shipping hardware.

Managing Director, John Crittenden

“As any good distributor will confirm, our main objective is to provide fast, efficient delivery of products within our customers’ required timescale. Daily we aim to achieve the highest On Time In Full (OTIF) service level. Everyone at Carl F Groupco is committed to ensuring that full consignments are shipped… we understand the frustration of not receiving a delivery on time or a shipment arrives but it is incomplete. We also differentiate ourselves by providing a consultancy service to customers.

To achieve these objectives, we are working hard behind the scenes.

Planning is a key activity – we gauge the stock levels needed to pre-empt demand and achieve our OTIF targets. Our IT department is an important part of this process: they identify the latest software and introduce it across the organisation to ensure all departments achieve our objectives.

We have long been at the forefront of IT developments to aid stock ordering. For example, we have a sophisticated MRP (Material Requirements Planning) system which enables our purchasing department to predict order requirements and seasonal trends. It also allows us to manage our stock value in the most efficient way possible. At any one time, we keep over £3 million of stock covering over 7,000 product lines. However, as much as we work with our computer systems, the input of our purchasing and sales teams is invaluable due to their depth of knowledge of our customers and their product requirements.

With increasing revisions to security, fire and durability testing standards, we make it our mission to be one step ahead of changes to standards so that we can advise our customers and help them with any product transitions. We are also members of the Council of Aluminium in Building (CAB): this gives us access to the most up to date industry standards advice and ensures that we can fully support our customers.

We go the extra mile by working with customers to support them through product testing and, as part of this process, we advise on relevant specifications. So often Technical Managers are desk bound but this certainly isn’t the case at Carl F Groupco: John Mitchell spends a lot of his time out of the office providing customers with support, including new product training.

To enable us to offer comprehensive product support we work closely with our manufacturer partners. We believe in long-term relationships and our association with FUHR for example dates back to the 1960’s. We have grown with FUHR to increase our offer from standard mechanical locks to the fully motorised 881 multipoint lock. We spend time selecting the most reputable brands and, when products have been chosen, we ensure that our staff receive extensive product training. Our entire sales team has visited FUHR’s German headquarters… they even know how to make a lock!

We work with a wide range of European manufacturers, all of whom are renowned for their expertise in hardware design. Because we have in-depth knowledge of the UK’s hardware requirements we often assist the manufacturers that we represent providing input into new product developments. For example, we have been selected as a hardware supplier for Liniar’s new range of reversible windows and, as part of our work, our PN-Roto technical team liaised with Liniar providing hardware advice and development input.

Our business strategy has always been to place ourselves in the shoes of our customers. This has resulted in our strong OTIF focus and has led to industry initiatives that ensure we keep one step ahead of hardware trends.

SmartSecure is an excellent example of our pre-emptive approach to product planning… with our new generation electronic locking and access control brand we are ahead of the curve providing a technical solution that is being embraced for both its high-end design appeal and by Housing Associations for its practical access management features.”

Car F Groupco Storage Investment Supports Brexit Initiative

Carl F Groupco WarehouseAs part of Carl F Groupco’s Brexit planning, the hardware supplier has expanded its storage facilities to house increased stock. Additional eight metre high racking installed at the company’s UK warehouse in Peterborough represents an investment of £30,000. The customised racking has been designed to accommodate two metre long double pallets, which will house multipoint door locks in over 250 locations plus tilt and turn hardware in over 140 Euro pallet locations.

Carl F Groupco is also committed to a further £1million investment for stock provision as part of its Brexit strategy to maintain its high service levels and On Time In Full delivery commitment.

The hardware distributor offers an expanding catalogue of over 7,000 hardware lines including its own-brand SmartSecure electronic locking solutions.

Architectural Design Specialists Adopt SmartSecure

Trombé ProjectTrombé, specialists in architectural design, structural glazing and extensions for high-end contemporary residential and commercial projects has incorporated Carl F Groupco’s SmartSecure electronic locking and advanced access technology into its minimal frame sliding door system. Designed and manufactured by Trombé, the aluminium door system’s slim styling and sophisticated aesthetics are complemented by the new generation control features offered by SmartSecure.

The popular minimal system from Trombé, which is structurally glazed to conceal as much of the frame as possible, is used in 70% of the company’s projects. Commenting on the adoption of SmartSecure technology, Raichel Warren, an architect for Trombé said:

“Our clients have an excellent eye – they like to push design boundaries and we like to produce stylish and practical solutions that challenge the norm. This was a key reason for our selection of Carl F Groupco as a supply partner – they are extremely creative in their approach. The flexibility of the SmartSecure solution, and the willingness of the technical team to think outside the box and provide guidance at every step of the process, has ensured that we can confidently offer Smart locking to our clients.

“Our evolution to electronic locking has also been enabled by SmartSecure because it is supplied as a complete system as opposed to ad hoc components that haven’t been designed to work together. We needed to be confident of the highest level of performance quality for our clients.”

SmartSecure solutions from window and door hardware distributor Carl F Groupco are Smart access control systems with motorised multipoint locking supported by radio access control systems.

A Smart and Specialist Strategy

Carl F Groupco reports a successful year with ongoing development of its extensive catalogue of over 7,000 lines catering for all window and door hardware requirements. Brands that have performed particularly well for the distributor include SmartSecure that provides new generation electronic door locking and access control: this has achieved a 90% year on year increase in sales since its launch in 2016.

John Crittenden

Key achievements during 2018 include the launch of a new Carl F Groupco hardware website. The company also upgraded its Carl F direct website for its e-commerce tools and consumables business. Providing next working day delivery, Carl F direct enables Carl F Groupco to provide a one stop shop for the window and door industry. Commenting on the successful year, Managing Director John Crittenden said:

“We have made our mark as a major player in the UK hardware supply market and for that I thank our hardworking staff at both our Peterborough and Cumbernauld distribution centres who work tirelessly to achieve our on time in full delivery target. I also thank our manufacturing partners who deliver consistently high quality, innovative products and support our service philosophy.

“Expansion of our product range is a real achievement, particularly in light of turbulent market conditions with fluctuating exchange rates. And, as we brace ourselves for the impact of Brexit, it has to be acknowledged that the beginning of 2019 could be a slightly rocky road for the UK as a whole, but we have plans in place to ensure we continue to meet our performance and delivery targets.”

Looking ahead to 2019, Carl F Groupco reports that demand for SmartSecure is set to continue to grow in a range of markets including Housing Associations and designer installations. Specialist products are also on track for growth including fire rated fittings, high specification aluminium door locks and hardware for Liniar’s new reversible window that is ideally suited to high rise installations.

John King Appointed to Carl F Groupco Board

John King has been promoted to Sales Director for Carl F Groupco. While retaining his national sales management responsibilities, he will also sit on the company’s board of directors.

John King

With over thirty years’ experience gained across management, technical, sales and hands-on roles in the door and window industries, John returned to Carl F Groupco in 2017 to head up the company’s nationwide team of Regional Sales Managers (RSMs): he had previously worked for the company for eight years as an RSM.

Commenting on the appointment of John King to the board, Managing Director John Crittenden said:

“With a strong background in management, a passion for Carl F Groupco’s products and a commitment to
our service ethos, we welcome John to our board of directors. The promotion is highly deserved and he
will be an asset to our board contributing to strategic planning for the continued growth of
our brands and distribution service.”

After starting his career in fabrication in the early days of PVCu, John moved to a technical services post. He went on to take the positions of Production Director and head of a commercial installation operation before
joining Carl F Groupco.

Trends, technology and tactics

Q: What have been Carl F Groupco’s main successes, and challenges, of the past year?
A: Since launching our electronic door locking and access control brand, SmartSecure, in 2016 we have seen a 90% increase in sales year on year. It was a bold move and a massive investment but it is reaping rewards. Early adopters of Smart Tech range from the aspirational residential market to Housing Associations and sheltered housing installations … it is a solution that is popular across all sectors. The success of SmartSecure during the past year has been aided by one of our customers, Grabex Windows, featuring the FUHR 881 fully motorised multipoint door lock on its stand at the 2018 Grand Designs Live London event: our fingerprint and remote key fob access control options were displayed on Grabex’s timber door.

Another significant success for us has been the achievements of our PN-Roto technical team who liaised with Liniar providing hardware advice and development input for a new range of reversible windows which are ideally suited to high rise applications. Our staff were involved in the development project from start to finish and it resulted in Carl F Groupco being selected as a hardware supplier and we will be selling the established PN by Roto Uni Hinge and Roto TSL Espagnolette fitting options directly to Liniar’s customers.

John Crittenden

One of our ongoing challenges is stock management – if we haven’t got stock we can’t maintain our high standards of delivery. We offer over 7,000 lines and orders are often ad-hoc / contract led – this means a frequent requirement to supply a wide number of options in varying sizes. And colour profiles are growing in popularity which also means we need to stock more variants. But it is a challenge that we rise to on a daily basis: we have become very good at predicting industry trends. The bar that we set for ourselves is very high for On Time In Full (OTIF) deliveries – we frequently achieve 98% and we measure this on the basis of complete orders … rapid despatch is no good if you have bought a tilt and turn set and only receive 14 out of 15 parts.

Q: What have been this year’s hot topics for hardware?
A: Smart Tech, as previously mentioned, and automatic locking (the FUHR 833) have been hot topics. Sales of the Yale Conexis, which can be a DIY after fit, are also growing so all three levels of the Smart lock market are increasing – the retrofit, the mechanical 833 and the “all singing all dancing” locking and access control solution. Other buzz subjects have included high security hardware and growing demand for high-end aluminium products. Fire doors have also been a strong feature with the Grenfell tragedy having widespread repercussions – it has had major impact on industry standards for fire regulations and shown how important testing is. The disaster has shown it is essential to use the right product for the application with correct installation. I feel strongly that our industry must have input into all relevant Government enquiries.

Q: Looking to the future, what products do you predict will be the big sellers of 2019? And what is Carl F Groupco’s strategy for growth?
A: The most popular products for the coming year are set to be the more specialist lines like hardware for the new Liniar window that I’ve mentioned, fire rated fittings and high specification aluminium door locks. With regards to Carl F Groupco’s strategy for growth, we will increase investment in our customer service teams and continue to work closely with our manufacturing partners. We will also maintain our focus on offering exceptional service.

Q: Are there any changes to legislation, regulations or standards that will impact the hardware sector in the year ahead?
A: The answer to this question unavoidably has to link to Brexit. In reality, I believe we will mirror European standards. The bigger issue is what the new bureaucracy is going to be and the impact on logistics i.e. getting the products, delivering them and the associated paperwork. We are already talking to our European based suppliers about how we manage the situation in the short term and we will be building buffer stocks in case there are logistical problems.

Q: If you were to sum up Carl F Groupco’s brand values, what would these be?
A: Customer service is at the heart of our brand including reliability, durable products, a responsive team and ability to offer solutions. Carl F Groupco is about products, delivery and people.

Carl F Groupco Leaders Complete Management Course

As part of Continuing Professional Development at Carl F Groupco, the management team undertook a BTEC course in the Principles of Leadership and Management and the Principles of Managing Performance. All seven of the company’s managers successfully completed the coursework and sat an exam to achieve BTEC certification.

John Mitchell

The course, which addressed key management issues, principles and legal matters, was part of Carl F Groupco’s ongoing commitment to training: the department heads gained additional management expertise to assist them in their daily dealings with team members.

One of the main benefits to the company of all its managers receiving the education and instruction has been harmonisation across the organisation. Management skills have also been developed that support a new on-line appraisal system that is used on an ongoing basis and accessed by both the managers and their team members.

Non-certified professional management training has also been provided to three Carl F Groupco supervisors, this included Management Principles, Appraisals, Managing people and Good Documentation.

Key points for security

SmartSecure:
One of our stand-out brands is SmartSecure which provides electronic locking and access control. With strong security and safety benefits, SmartSecure has wide ranging appeal as doors are automatically locked on closing, which means that occupants are always secure. It is endorsed by Secured by Design and the locking technology at its heart is provided by industry brand leaders.

Carl F Groupco celebrates year on year sales growth for SmartSecure.

A retro-fit route is offered with the Yale Conexis Smart locking handle. Alternatively, for the full multipoint door route with FUHR locking technology that is electronically operated with fingerprint options for opening, a replacement door is usually required. Both options are a straightforward process for fabricators and installers.

Having been one of the pioneers of Smart Tech in the hardware sector, we have carved a niche and we are experiencing significant growth from the aspirational domestic sector through to social housing and Housing Associations. Benefits include aesthetic appeal – the product looks good and, because it is easy to fit, it has ‘clean’ design lines … it also offers practical advantages of access control.

Carl F Groupco’s technical expertise sets us apart and this comes to the fore with SmartSecure – our staff are fully trained and on hand to provide straightforward advice … we don’t confuse the issue with unnecessary jargon. In short, we speak your language.

Emergency Panic Hardware:
We also understand that it can be time consuming translating standards into hardware selection – we therefore ensure we are well versed in relevant regulations.

One area where we offer practical and pragmatic advice is how best to achieve panic or emergency exit doors. First, it is important to establish exactly where the door set will be fitted and who will be using it – this determines what hardware is required to meet regulations. Non-public buildings, for example, where potential users have received full door operation training, require hardware to meet the EN 179 standard for emergency exits. However, if the door is to be fitted to public buildings or other premises where occupants may not be familiar with exit routes and hardware devices, it will need to meet EN 1125 for panic exit.

We offer FUHR 870 and 871 Type 8 emergency exit locks for aluminium, PVCu or timber doors plus FUHR’s CE marked 881, 833P and 834P panic locks which provide electronic or automatic locking options. Other products that we distribute include facefix Strand Antipanic gearing: the EN 1125 Motorised or Modular Touch Bar, the EN 1125 Modular Push Bar, the EN 179 Modular Push Pad and a lever or knob operated Outside Access device.

Speciality and Ancillary Products:
It is important to include reference to our speciality and ancillary products. The HS Portal by Siegenia, for example, supports the growing market for stylish, wide span doors that extend the living area of homes to encompass the property’s outside space.

Letterplates are an important ancillary item and Trojan’s TS 008 accredited Unicorn Letterplate is certified to PAS 24:2016 and is Document Q compliant. Designed to meet the exacting requirements of TS 008, the letterplate can be installed on any door with existing PAS 24 accreditation, without the need to retest.

A Comprehensive Catalogue:
The products mentioned are just a snapshot of the fittings we distribute. With over 7,000 lines in our catalogue you can rest assured that we have the hardware to meet your needs backed by service that is second to none. We understand you can’t wait for deliveries and you need full consignments … we know that opening a box and finding an essential part is missing is not helpful.

In summary, our range is comprehensive, we focus on service and we understand the importance of reliable distribution.

SmartSecure and lots of other favourites

The success of SmartSecure:
A round-up of our most popular hardware solutions has to start with SmartSecure launched in 2016. A lot has happened since we developed our offer to include a dedicated electronic locking and access control brand and we have successfully carved a niche in the Smart Tech sector. Significant growth in demand has led to sales revenue increases of just under 90% year on year.

High Rise Flats

Strong interest has been shown across all markets from ‘designer’ residential installations through to social housing and Housing Associations – all sectors appreciate its sophisticated simplicity and the care industry particularly welcomes management features that permit access for authorised medical and support workers.

In just two years since the launch of SmartSecure, we have seen a significant shift in perception of electronic locking and Smart access control. And, as we adopt Smart Technology in other areas of our homes with lights, heating and cameras, Smart door locks are becoming increasingly accessible.

In addition to solutions based on FUHR’s fully motorised multipoint lock with automatic locking, the SmartSecure range was increased earlier this year to include Yale’s Conexis L1 retro-fit Smart keyless locking handle which is ideal as an upgrade for existing customers or DIY solution.

Recognition of Roto:
As we spotlight flagship lines it is important to mention Roto which, like FUHR, is a trusted brand with strong German heritage. Roto has a worldwide reputation for quality, innovative and secure hardware systems.

We were delighted to reinforce our relationship with Roto in February this year when we announced the addition of the TSL espagnolette, a product with strong security features and significant accreditation. The addition of the Roto TSL Espagnolette to our catalogue means we now offer the full Roto Twin-Cam Security Lock (TSL) range for casement and reversible windows with Grade 5 surface finish as standard. The ability to use this espagnolette with PN by Roto reversible hardware enables us to supply the full range of Roto reversible window sets with lock and hinge.

High Rise Hardware:
Hardware for high-rise installations is also popular and, as part of our work promoting fittings to systems companies, our PN-Roto technical team liaised with Liniar providing advice and development input for the company’s new range of windows that will be available exclusively to fabricators. The established PN by Roto Uni Hinge and Roto TSL Espagnolette fittings that we will sell directly to customers complement the slimline design of Liniar’s window range.

The new Liniar window with rotating sash for easy cleaning inside the property is ideally suited to high-rise applications. Patented features including Liniar’s co-extruded bubble gasket, thermal dam and glazing flipper ensure draught-free installation with high thermal efficiency.

Security Solutions:
Security is always a hot topic for the hardware industry and I’m proud to report that we supply one of the largest selections of PAS 24 and Secured by Design approved window and door hardware ranges to the UK market. For doors, we sell a full range of FUHR locks which are Secured by Design accredited and fully tested to PAS 24. Other lines with strong security features include Ingenious Professional and Duplex locks, the Hoppe PAS 24 door handle, CFG TS 007 cylinders, Trojan Athena door hinges and letterplate cowls. For windows, PAS 24 compliant espags include the Kenrick Excalibur, MACO RAIL, Roto TSL, Siegenia Trident and Trojan Stallion 2, as well as friction stay hinge guards which protect against attack.

Comprehensive Catalogue:
But this is just a small selection from our range which comprises over 7,000 product lines encompassing door and window hardware, ventilation, consumables and tools. Each and every product and its variants have been carefully selected to be of the highest quality and to ensure we support all hardware requirements and applications. Other manufacturer’s products that we supply include Cotswold Architectural, Greenwood, HOPPE, Kenrick, MACO, Siegenia, Strand and Trojan.

The company advises that early adopters of its innovative Smart technology include the fabrication market and Housing Associations who recognise benefits across different access control applications, the sophistication of the technology and its simplicity of configuration that enables easy integration.

Commenting on the early growth of the SmartSecure brand, Carl F Groupco’s Managing Director John Crittenden said:

“In just two years since the launch of SmartSecure, we have seen a significant shift in perception of electronic locking and Smart access control. As we adopt Smart Technology in other areas of our homes with lights, heating and cameras, Smart door locks are becoming increasingly accessible.”

As a forerunner of the Smart locking and access control evolution in the UK’s hardware market, Carl F Groupco has continued to invest heavily in SmartSecure including designing a dedicated showroom.  And, in addition to solutions based on FUHR’s fully motorised multipoint lock with automatic locking, the range was increased earlier this year to include Yale’s Conexis L1 retro-fit Smart keyless locking handle.

Carl F Groupco advises that the SmartSecure brand is set to continue to be one of the significant differentiators for the company’s hardware supply service, enabling the business to offer high-end technology as part of tailored solutions.

Ten Year Milestone for Carl F Groupco’s Marketing Manager

Clare White, Carl F Groupco’s Marketing Manager, celebrates ten years working for the national hardware distributor. Her career with the company has seen her progress from Marketing Assistant to Executive and, in 2014, she was promoted to Marketing Manager.

Marketing Manager Clare White celebrates ten years working for hardware distributor Carl F Groupco.
Marketing Manager, Clare White, celebrates ten years working for hardware distributor Carl F Groupco.

Career highlights have included helping to establish the organisation as a major player in the UK’s hardware distribution market. The opportunity to launch two brands have also been significant landmarks – the first was Carl F Groupco, which followed the merger of Groupco with Carl F, and secondly, Clare played a key role bringing SmartSecure to market, which put the company on the map as pioneers in electronic door locking and access control.

Clare confirms that the company’s main focus is to ensure the customer is always front of mind and to put the building blocks in place to support ongoing development of the organisation. Carl F Groupco’s range of SmartSecure access control options allow the user to electronically unlock the door. The FUHR mulitronic 881 is at the heart of the solution – when the door is closed, all locking points, including the deadbolt, lock automatically driven by a dual motor to engage and secure within three seconds of closing. The FUHR 881 integrates with all SmartSecure access control options including the fingerprint and remote key fob access displayed by Grabex at Grand Designs.

Returning to Grand Designs for the ninth time, Grabex Windows presented a wide range of glazing products manufactured at its factory in Orpington.  Carl F Groupco is an established supplier of hardware including FUHR mechanical and electronic door / window locks for Grabex’s aluminium, uPVC and timber range of windows, doors and conservatories.

Carl F Groupco Hardware Report: Premier Products

Carl F Groupco Hardware Report: Premier Products

In this report for Glass and Glazing products, Clare Crockett, Marketing Manager for Carl F Groupco highlights the fact that high end hardware has an increasingly important role to play in enhancing and differentiating the company’s range of window and door fittings.

Clare Crockett: Marketing Manager
Clare Crockett: Marketing Manager

“Premier products have strong design appeal and are extremely versatile: they also give leverage to fabricators to offer highly sophisticated products that add value to their range.

With a long-standing track record supplying hardware solutions, at Carl F Groupco we are adept at tailoring our portfolio to meet all needs. Regarding premier products, we offer a range of hardware solutions including SmartSecure, our 881 fully motorised multipoint door lock and smart access control brand. Other high end solutions featured in our catalogue are patio entrance hardware and products catering for the increasingly popular aluminium market.

SmartSecure:

Recognising the Smart Home technology revolution, Carl F Groupco’s high profile SmartSecure solutions replace the traditional key with a range of access control options. While SmartSecure is highly sophisticated, simplicity is at its heart with emphasis on ease of installation, straight forward adoption for fabricators and accessible support.

‘SmartTouch’, which is a pioneering access system, enables entry with the simple touch of sensor: access is facilitated if an active, moving transponder is within range. Radio-based access control systems are also available including a radio keypad, transponder and fingerprint scanner for keyless biometric access control.

Three SmartSecure variants are available tailored for high end residential, commercial and communal doors – all utilise the same base hardware which enables fabricators to target multiple sectors with ease.

With property owners becoming more savvy with their home improvement investments, we believe that the ability to offer products like SmartSecure is instrumental in allowing fabricators to differentiate their offer from the competition.

FUHR Flexibility:

Carl F Groupco’s SmartSecure brand, offering premier products, targets the savvy home improver
Carl F Groupco’s SmartSecure brand, offering premier products, targets the savvy home improver

The FUHR multitronic 881 door lock at the heart of SmartSecure technology can be used with combinations of wiring and access control options to suit the differing requirements of the end user, from high end ‘grand design’ style domestic dwellings to a EN 1125 CE marked panic exit door on a commercial building.  As the standard preparation for the lock is the same for any style of door, with just minor adjustments for the associated hardware, fabricators have a valuable opportunity to supply doors to a wider market base.

As it is possible to achieve EN 179 and EN 1125 with both mechanical and electronic door locks within the FUHR range, the FUHR 881 electronic lock is a simple way to add a new revenue stream to a business. With little change to door preparation compared to the mechanical variant, these locks can be fitted along with panic bar and CES free movement cylinders offering complete packages where panic/emergency exit doors are required for commercial work and communal door entrances.

The multitronic 881 is also sold as a stand-alone product which provides a simple upgrade option for end users. With relatively little additional preparation work for the fabricator, the 881 gives the opportunity to sell high end doors with enhanced margin capabilities.

Speciality Sectors:

Other premier products offered include large patio entrance hardware such as lift and slide products. The HS Portal by Siegenia, for example, supports the growing market for stylish, wide span doors that extend the living area of homes to encompass the property’s outside space.

Aluminium is another expanding sector with durability, security and design aesthetics cited as key reasons for its appeal and we are supporting demand with complementary hardware. Ranges included in Carl F Groupco’s Aluminium Collection are the Roto/PN Uni for reversible window gearing, Siegenia ALU tilt & turn gearing and Cotswold Architectural Products’ friction & parallel stays. Products also cater for remote window control, emergency and panic exit / multipoint door locks plus folding sliding door, lift & slide, and tilt & slide hardware.

Having highlighted the significance and importance of premier products, it is important to emphasise that compiling a catalogue is all about balance – high end hardware has an essential part to play, but this should not be at the expense of mid-range or value fittings. All budgets need to be catered for and Carl F Groupco provides a full spectrum of options to meet the needs of all requirements.”

Embracing Automation

Embracing Automation

John Crittenden, Managing Director, Carl F Groupco
John Crittenden, Managing Director, Carl F Groupco

In this article for Window News, John Crittenden, Managing Director of Carl F Groupco explains that attitudes in the hardware sector are changing regarding automation.

Ten years ago some capability was offered, but Smart Tech hadn’t been embraced by the UK market and the appetite for electronic systems was embryonic.

Today that is changing, solutions have been created, capabilities are being recognised and people are putting real value on the technology.

Looking at why we are on the cusp of a boom in Smart Tech, John points to three things:

i)    The acceptance of, and confidence in, automation in other areas of our lives
ii)   The move towards Smart Homes supported by initiatives taken by major utility companies and technology providers
iii)   The impact of national media coverage and the lifestyle vision presented on programmes such as Grand Designs

With regard to the first point, we are immersed in automation and it has widely become the accepted way of life. Cars have been unlocked using key fobs for many years and are even being superseded with keyless entry systems. We don’t question this technology: it has become second nature, it simplifies the process and most of us would be reluctant to return to the traditional key. This significantly helps the evolution to electronic based technologies in the door hardware sector.

Smart Homes no longer sound like a futuristic prediction. Many people have some element of Smart Tech in their property and, spearheaded by major utility providers, we are moving towards full control and connectivity of home appliances.

New electronic era

The new era of electronic living is widely presented on television and in newspaper supplements – it is regularly featured in aspirational TV programmes including Grand Designs. It is also a topic that is taking centre stage at both business and consumer home exhibitions.

Additionally, other countries have been trail blazers setting out the stall for the scope and potential of the new technology. Germany, the home of locking specialists FUHR, has been particularly pioneering in developing and adopting the intelligent home and integrating this within their door fittings.

Against this backdrop, and supported by our long-standing partnership with FUHR, in 2016 Carl F Groupco introduced SmartSecure, our electronic locking and access control brand. With our track record working with FUHR understanding the practicalities and the needs of the market, we made the decision to fully embrace this opportunity.

The established FUHR multitronic 881 locking system is at the heart of SmartSecure – this gives all important validity to the solutions and assurance that it is tried and tested technology.

The traditional key is replaced with a range of access control options

‘SmartConnect easy’ is an optional access control package using a smartphone. Keyless operation and monitoring is provided via an intelligent WLAN-based system. Complete assurance is given with sensor monitoring of door leaf and bolt positions that enable verification of the locking status wherever and whenever required.

A second SmartSecure option is ‘SmartTouch’. This pioneering keyless access system enables easy entry by simply touching a sensor. Access to the property is gained if an active, moving transponder is within range and the sensor is touched. This means keys can be in a pocket when hands are full and the door will open – so, no more struggling up to your house with shopping, putting bags down, finding your key, unlocking the door and picking up your bags again. For a stylish, concealed solution, the sensor can also be fitted within a pull handle.

Radio-based access control systems are also available including a radio keypad, transponder and fingerprint scanner for keyless biometric access control.

The real value in Smart Tech, such as SmartSecure, comes from the benefits it affords to users, such as easy access when carrying shopping, as described above. The advantages can be value add aesthetics to create a ‘Grand Design’ style home or  practical and pragmatic reasons such as in the care sector e.g. controlled access to authorised nurse or welfare visitors.

Total support and tailored solutions

Total support is essential. Smart Tech can’t be gloss, hype and vapour ware – it has to be a tailored solution, it has to offer real benefits and it has to be supported. The technology is just the tip of the iceberg. Advice and guidance is needed to assist customers as they embrace the new Smart era – our service team was in place from the outset and we appointed a dedicated Business Development Manager. Additionally, all staff that have customer contact are trained in SmartSecure’s solutions.

These are exciting times for the industry where we are witnessing real change and a real opportunity. At Carl F Groupco we firmly believe that you can’t play around on the side-lines offering ad hoc products: total solutions are needed that are comprehensively supported and this is our focus for SmartSecure.

SmartSecure: Intuitive Installation

SmartSecure: Intuitive Installation

John Mitchell, Carl F Groupco’s Technical Manager demonstrates SmartSecure Intuitive Installation.
John Mitchell, Carl F Groupco’s Technical Manager demonstrates SmartSecure.

Carl F Groupco reports that the industry is embracing a major Smart Home technology revolution. To assist those working in the front line, this article sets out to provide an overview of the company’s SmartSecure brand, which offers a range of electronic door locking and smart access control solutions.

Incorporating state-of-the-art FUHR multitronic 881 locking technology, aesthetic, practical and technical benefits are offered across a wide-range of installations including housing associations, the growing retirement-living sector and care homes.

The traditional key is replaced with a range of access control options. ‘SmartConnect easy’ is an optional access control package using a smartphone: this intelligent WLAN-based system is a significant USP that provides keyless operation and monitoring. Sensor monitoring of door leaf and bolt position ensures complete peace of mind as locking status can be verified from any location, whenever required.

‘SmartTouch’ is a pioneering access system that is another SmartSecure option. Easy entry is enabled by simply touching a sensor. Using innovative technology, access is facilitated if an active, moving transponder is within range. For a stylish, concealed solution, the sensor can also be fitted within a pull handle.

Radio-based access control systems are also available including a radio keypad, transponder and fingerprint scanner for keyless biometric access control.

With strong security and safety benefits, SmartSecure has wide ranging appeal including the fact that doors are automatically locked on closing, which means that occupants are always secure.

Reinforcing the high calibre of security offered, the FUHR 881 multitronic lock, which is at the heart of Carl F Groupco’s SmartSecure electronic door locking and smart access control solutions, has achieved Secured by Design accreditation.

Commenting on the importance of being able to display the Secured by Design logo for the FUHR 881, John Mitchell, Carl F Groupco’s Technical Manager said:

“As an officially recognised accreditation body, Secured by Design reassures home owners that products are tested to the most stringent and current security standards. It also aids fabricators and installers in demonstrating the quality of their offer.

“This achievement affirms our commitment to the evolution of our range and underscores our objective of providing the very latest in technology without compromising security.”

The FUHR multitronic 881’s intelligent technology, combined with a modular construction, has made the versatile locking system ideally suited for SmartSecure’s range of  access control solutions while also being compatible with third party building control systems, alarms, door openers and access control.

Simple to Fit

It would be easy to think that with all this capability comes complexity of installation but Carl F Groupco emphasises that this is not the case, the company stresses that SmartSecure products are very simple to fit and technical experts are on hand to answer any questions. It is also stylish – all components can be concealed, which reduces the risk of tampering and, for total flexibility, the system can be integrated with existing access control or building management systems. The lock requires just four additional routings compared to a standard multipoint lock, this allows the transformer and cabling to be fully concealed into the frame. If any assistance is needed, the company is on hand to support – as with all Carl F Groupco’s hardware products, comprehensive service and technical assistance is readily available.

To demonstrate the sophistication and simplicity of SmartSecure, a high quality, professionally animated video depicts the capabilities of the company’s state-of-the-art SmartSecure solutions for electronic door locking and smart access control. The video can be viewed on the SmartSecure website http://www.smartsecure.co.uk or via the Carl F Groupco YouTube channel.

Doors Open for Smart Tech

Doors Open for Smart Tech

An article written for Glass Times, July 2017.

John Crittenden – Managing Director of Carl F Groupco reports that markets are opening up for SmartSecure, the company’s Smart Tech electronic locking and access control technology.

Representing the biggest investment ever made by the company, SmartSecure was no leap of faith.

The solutions incorporate FUHR’s multitronic door lock – these have been distributed by FUHR within Europe and they are already widely adopted in Italy and Germany. Other European countries are following the Smart Tech trend with Carl F Groupco championing roll out of the technology in the UK.

The Smart Tech FUHR multitronic twin-drive motor which has the capability of locking and unlocking doors.
The FUHR multitronic twin-drive motor which has the capability of locking and unlocking doors.

The traditional key is replaced with a range of access control options. ‘SmartTouch’, where entry is made by touching a sensor, was particularly popular with stand visitors at the FIT Show. Access is simple, it is facilitated if an active, moving transponder is within range – it means that you can walk towards your door with your key in your pocket, touch a sensor and the door will automatically unlock. For a stylish, concealed solution, the sensor can also be fitted within a pull handle.

The SmartSecure brand also includes ‘SmartConnect easy’ an access control package using a smartphone: an intelligent WLAN-based system that provides keyless operation and monitoring. Sensor monitoring of door leaf and bolt position ensures complete peace of mind as locking status can be verified from any location, whenever required.

Radio-based access control systems are also available including a radio keypad, transponder and fingerprint scanner for keyless biometric access control.

Early interest in SmartSecure in the UK is coming from care homes, residential & Housing Association organisations and this is where the first contracts have been won.

Selling Solutions

Expanding on the value of the technology, John Crittenden says:

“The appeal to Housing Associations comes from the safety and access features afforded by FUHR’s multitronic
locking system. This is a very neat product which, although it can be described as hi-tech, it is by no means complicated.

“What we are selling here are solutions. We’re not promoting the FUHR multitronic per se, we are providing an answer to controlled access… this means that only authorised visitors, such as care staff, can enter. And access is easy; the person in the home doesn’t even need to go to the door.

“People reading this might think that all this is great in terms of access and control, but what happens in the event of an emergency escape. That is catered for very efficiently, and very simply, with a door handle over-ride all to EN 179 and EN 1125 emergency and panic escape standards.

“And, aside from care home organisations, this solution has individual appeal. If anyone is worried about an elderly relative, SmartSecure will give peace of mind. The door lock automatically throws all locking points and fully secures the door on closing, meaning that the door is safe from opportunist burglars.”

Both Carl F Groupco and FUHR recognise that the potential for Smart Tech is huge and that care homes are just the tip of the iceberg.  Around the corner are the ‘Grand Design’ opportunities where, increasingly, people with the aspiration for home improvements are looking for state-of-the-art solutions to advance controls and enhance their door locking technology.

Supporting the company’s promotion of SmartSecure is a permanent stand at the National Self Build and Renovation Centre (NSBRC) in Swindon.  The display presents the solutions, and their advantages, to the self-build, renovation and home improvement markets.

The potential for SmartSecure is such that the brand has become  a major new division for Carl F Groupco supported by specially commissioned marketing materials including a video, website, literature and showroom at the company’s Peterborough distribution and administration centre.

Carl F Groupco’s hands on hardware

Carl F Groupco’s hands on hardware

An article written for Window News, July 2017.

SmartSecure & Carl F Groupco’s hardware selector information point.

Exhibiting on its largest ever purpose built stand, a wide range of hands-on hardware displays were by presented by Carl F Groupco at this year’s FIT Show. Centre stage was SmartSecure – Carl F Groupco’s electronic locking and smart access control solutions: launched at last year’s exhibition, the company celebrated the first anniversary of the brand and its success becoming established as a smart hardware hub.

Managing Director John Crittenden was pleased to meet Window News to present a display which distilled the company’s range of over 7,000 product lines and highlight a handy hardware selector tool that has been developed in-house – watch this space for a new app based on the selector.

Regarding SmartSecure, first year achievements have included developing a fully equipped showroom at the company’s UK distribution centre in Peterborough which presents solutions in a range of installations. Carl F Groupco has also established a permanent SmartSecure display at the National Self Build & Renovation Centre (NSBRC) and supplied doors for a number of customers’ demonstration showrooms.

Not Just a Lock in a Box

Commenting on the interest in Smart Tech, John explained:

“Attitudes are changing. The UK market is starting to put value on locking and control technology. What we are doing here is selling solutions…..this is not just a lock in a box and it isn’t a gadget. The real value comes from ease of access and the ability to check remotely that people are secure. This technology is of huge support, and interest, to the care sector, and this is where we are experiencing early attention that is converting to sales.  With the likes of British Gas heavily promoting its HIVE system, there is growing awareness of the capabilities of smart home technology.

“Electronic locking and smart access control are no longer visionary technologies, they are a practical reality. This market is huge: it represents over 20% of FUHR’s business and we are just starting to tap into its application potential. Italy and Germany are the biggest markets, with the UK

and Holland following as major growth sectors.

“We recognise the importance of providing a full range of solutions with comprehensive support. We have never been just ‘box shifters’, we have always backed our product ranges with full technical service and this philosophy has never been more important than in our support for the electronic evolution.”

System 700 Show Launch

Aside from SmartSecure, there was plenty to talk about regarding Carl F Groupco’s mainstay hardware range that is the backbone of the company’s offer. As sole distributor of PN hardware by Roto in the UK, the new System 700 range for reversible windows was revealed. The fully reversible system features a slimmer hinge that works on a 7mm groove. With consistent aesthetics across all window types, widespread appeal is predicted including the new build housing market. Expanding on the product launch, John said:

“Reversible windows are an established market dating back over twenty-five years. What we have with the System 700 is an upgraded version of the PN UNI product that retains the trademark durability and functionality while advancing the range making it easier to fit. The latest product in the PN by Roto series is ideal for timber fabricators and systems companies looking to complement their flush casement window range.”

There was a real buzz on the Carl F Groupco stand with staff kept busy demonstrating products. The comprehensive selection of hardware on display also included Cotswold, Greenwood, Hoppe, Ingenious, Kenrick, MACO, Siegenia and Trojan products.

Opening Doors: Access Control in The Domestic Sector

Opening Doors: Access Control in The Domestic Sector

An article written for Glass and Glazing Products, June 2017.

Access control technology has been adopted in industrial and commercial buildings for decades and has evolved to create hugely complex and effective systems to suit the fast-moving pace of business. What is intriguing is the relatively slow transition into residential property. However, as Phil Rice, Carl F Groupco’s Business Development Manager for SmartSecure explains in this article, the potential in the domestic sector is about to be realised.

The domestic access control market offers major potential.
The domestic access control market offers major potential.

“The application of, and confidence in, smart solutions in the industrial sector abounds – everywhere we look in the commercial market we see its adoption.

So, why has the domestic sector been slow on the uptake?

One important reason is perception:  the general public often aren’t aware that access control can be simply incorporated into their front door.

All this is changing, interest in Smart Tech is increasing and this is reflected in the number of articles published on the subject, and the exhibitions that are dedicated to the topic, or incorporate it within their remit. We are all familiar with the features regularly appearing in the national press – a simple google search provides numerous articles on the subject.

Smart Technology is also a hot topic at many current events, not least the FIT Show. Outside the glass and glazing industry, there is the Internet of Things (IoT) Smart Summit, now in its third year in London:  a number of high profile brand names backing the event confirm the importance of the subject of intelligent connected living. And, with powerful influencers like Grand Designs promoting Smart Tech, it is clear that we are on the cusp of its more widespread adoption in the home.

People will always want to ensure only those they trust can enter their home: what is evolving is how access is granted.  And, as we rely increasingly on Smart Home technology, the security of the systems in place is becoming more important than ever before.

At Carl F Groupco, we believe that development and simplification of access control are key to meeting the needs of the home owner. Intuitive design and application is essential: this is the way Smart Tech will move forward in the domestic market.

Phil Rice, Carl F Groupco’s Business Development Manager for SmartSecure.
Phil Rice, Carl F Groupco’s Business Development Manager for SmartSecure.

Access control has worked in the commercial sector since the 1960’s and has effectively eliminated the problems relating to the loss of keys and the issues associated with instant barring of access to unwanted visitors. Although ideal for business, entry systems such as swipe cards are not quite slick enough to enhance our experience of entering our homes, and houses aren’t built with the infrastructure required to support and run commercial systems. Addressing this, Smart Tech has allowed access control products normally associated with commercial buildings to be simplified to suit the domestic market.

Domestic Demand

The domestic access control market is in its infancy, but growing fast. The major opportunity comes from the lack of access control currently in residential properties. With 28.1 million houses in the UK and a Government pushing to build 250,000 new homes a year, the scope is clear to see.
It’s also clear that the retrofit market is buoyant, with DIY installs on the up. The first fit market for people buying new doors is expanding too, with more and more door manufacturers offering a ‘Smart’ solution.

FIT Show Success for Carl F Groupco. Visitors to the Carl F Groupco stand at the FIT Show 2017.
Visitors to the Carl F Groupco stand at the FIT Show 2017.

High quality visits from decision makers, the launch of System 700 – Roto / PN’s new fully reversible hardware, freshly baked cookies and SmartSecure developments showcased on the stand combined to make this year’s FIT Show extremely successful for Carl F Groupco.

The show marked the first anniversary of SmartSecure since its launch at last year’s ‘FIT’. As part of the anniversary achievements, Carl F Groupco has achieved its goal of providing a smart hardware hub based on its electronic locking and smart access solutions.

Commenting, Carl F Groupco’s Managing Director, John Crittenden said:

“We are very much about personalised service and support. The FIT Show is therefore the ideal opportunity for us to meet up with our existing clients and showcase our range to potential customers. The exhibition also offers the chance for people to try our products and technology – this is particularly helpful for SmartSecure: once people have seen first-hand how simple and effective our smart solutions are, it is much easier to convey its capabilities.”

Commenting, Clare Crockett, Carl F Groupco’s Marketing Manager said:

“We like to think of all aspects of stand requirements, and we like to go the extra mile in all areas of our business. It does take a bit of extra effort to produce biscuits at the show, but there is nothing nicer than freshly baked cookies.

“Alongside our hospitality, we have an extensive range of window and door hardware products on display selected from our range of over 7,000 product lines: these will be installed on the stand to ensure visitors can appreciate their features and benefits. We also have our new catalogue, which can be collected from our stand.”

The FUHR 881 multitronic lock, a central element of Carl F Groupco’s SmartSecure solutions, has gained Secured by Design accreditation.

As the latest in a series of hardware products offered by Carl F Groupco to achieve Secured by Design, the company was confident of gaining the certification as the lock design, consistent with the established process for all FUHR locking systems, had already passed rigorous security testing.

The FUHR multitronic 881’s intelligent technology, combined with a modular construction, has made the versatile locking system ideally suited for SmartSecure’s range of solutions including the smart phone / tablet based SmartConnect easy; the transponder / sensor variant SmartTouch comfort and the brand’s radio-based access control systems.

Carl F Groupco: FIT and Ready

Carl F Groupco: FIT and Ready

In this article for Glass Times, two of the managers at hardware distributor Carl F Groupco provide insight into important areas of focus at the FIT Show.

Spotlight on Smart Tech

Phil Rice, Carl F Groupco’s Business Development Manager for SmartSecure.

Following the successful launch of SmartSecure at last year’s exhibition, Phil Rice, Carl F Groupco’s Business Development Manager for the brand explains how the company’s electronic locking and smart access control solutions will be key features of the company’s display.

“With interest in smart access control gathering momentum, we are preparing a larger, dedicated area to cater for interest in SmartSecure demonstrations. The solutions have wide-ranging appeal from architects and specifiers through to fabricators and installers: with this in mind, the display will illustrate a range of technology applications. It would, of course, be much simpler to just show PowerPoints and hand out brochures, but we strongly believe that people need to experience the technology.

“This year we are preparing doors to reflect three scenarios that fabricators and installers regularly come across namely, high end residential, communal and commercial applications.

“It is always a challenge to incorporate all our hardware and services without just exhibiting rows of handles and literature, but the marketing team have once again come up with a design that showcases all our most important product lines in a way that is very hands on and far from boring.

“Some might say it is a brave move to invest so heavily in up and coming technology and to devote such a large area of our stand to it. But society is waking up to Smart Tech and becoming increasingly reliant on it. It’s only a matter of time before people expect more from their front door. Already home owners and commercial organisations are demonstrating they are prepared to invest more in their entrance doors and systems.

“Events around the world are dedicated purely to this topic – we can’t be on the fringes, we have to fully commit. Of course, all our mainstay hardware lines are at the heart of our stand – these are essential to the ethos of Carl F Groupco, but Smart Technology needs separate focus and this is reflected in the design.”

Roto: Acquisition Advancements

Julie Warner, Carl F Groupco’s Roto / PN Product Manager with the company’s Technical Manager, John Mitchell.

The forthcoming FIT Show is also Carl F Groupco’s opportunity to launch the System 700, a new range of fully reversible hardware for windows manufactured by Roto/Peder Nielsen (PN).

As sole distributor of PN hardware by Roto in the UK, the new range will be showcased on the stand. This is significant as it reaffirms a relationship with the manufacturer that dates back to 2001 – a partnership that has continued to flourish following the acquisition of PN by Roto in 2016.

Commenting on advancements, Julie Warner, Carl F Groupco’s Roto/PN Product Manager explains,

“We have a long legacy with PN and we are building on this relationship. The PN brand is well respected throughout the industry, known for durability and offering impressive functionality for outward opening windows.  The main lines are the UNI top swing reversible gearing with two variants, Standard and Hotel, which complement the rest of our hardware range and are believed to be the most popular reversible products in the UK.

“With enhanced development capability, the acquisition of PN by Roto has paved the way for new innovation. In terms of product development, the System 700 launch at the FIT Show is particularly exciting: the slimmer hinge, which works on a 7mm groove, is ideal for systems companies who are looking to complement their flush casement window range with a fully reversible option. Aesthetics are consistent across all window types, which opens up potential for the range to new build housing markets.”

Carl F Groupco: Stand E40

Carl F Groupco will also feature Cotswold, FUHR, Greenwood, Hoppe, Ingenious, Kenrick, MACO, Siegenia and Trojan on its 96 sq metre stand. An innovative hardware selector, which summarises product options, will be displayed for the first time at FIT Show 2017.

SmartSecure: Straightforward Sophistication

SmartSecure: Straightforward Sophistication

In this report for The Fabricator, Carl F Groupco reports that the industry is on the cusp of a major smart home technology revolution.

SmartSecure from Carl F Groupco replaces the traditional key with a range of access control options.
SmartSecure from Carl F Groupco replaces the traditional key with a range of access control options.

Phil Rice, Carl F Groupco’s Business Development Manager for SmartSecure explains:

“Importantly, FUHR multitronic 881 locking technology is a highly secure and reliable solution. With a patented twin motor, all locking points are secured in just seconds after closing the door. The multitronic 881 automatically locks the door to a maximum level of security, ensuring that human error is avoided and enabling the door locking status to be checked at any time.

“There are clearly significant benefits of SmartSecure to users, whether these are people living in ‘grand design’ properties with a desire for latest technology or in the retirement / care sector where safety, security and simplicity are key to its appeal.”

Straightforward Sophistication

To demonstrate the sophistication and simplicity of SmartSecure, a high quality, professionally animated video has been commissioned.  The three minute film depicts the capabilities of the company’s state-of-the-art SmartSecure solutions for electronic door locking and smart access control. With particular focus on access control options, the video enables end-users to visualise the application, and advantages, of a SmartSecure installation in their home.  The video can be viewed on the SmartSecure hompage www.smartsecure.co.uk or via the Carl F Groupco YouTube channel.

Carl F Groupco encourages anyone working in the fenestration sector to visit their stand at the forthcoming FIT Show. The company is putting significant effort into creating hands-on demonstration areas where visitors can, without obligation, experience the capabilities of SmartSecure.

Hardware Horizons: Predictions for the year ahead from hardware distributor, Carl F Groupco

Hardware Horizons: Predictions for the year ahead from hardware distributor, Carl F Groupco

An article written for Windows Active, January 2017.

Clare Crockett, Marketing Manager, Carl F Groupco
Clare Crockett, Marketing Manager, Carl F Groupco

In this report, predictions for 2017 for the hardware sector are given to Windows Active by Carl F Groupco. The established supplier of window and door fittings works hard to keep its fingers on the pulse of industry trends and, as a result, the company is well placed to advise regarding impending advancements.

The technology trend

Commenting on an increasing appetite for advanced technology, Carl F Groupco’s Marketing Manager Clare Crockett says:

“We have seen an increase in awareness of smart locking technology from both fabricators and end users. Launching SmartSecure during 2016 at the FIT Show, and also exhibiting at a permanent display at the National Self Build and Renovation Centre (NSBRC), has given us direct market feedback that confirms the massive future potential of the smart locking and access control solutions market.

“While this area of the market will take time to gather pace in the mainstream, we are confident of it ultimately having widespread take up. Regarding the year ahead, we positively predict continued movement towards electronic locking. With significant interest already being expressed in SmartSecure, due to the convenience that domestic friendly access control offers for the home, we are secure in the fact that early adopters at the forefront of the smart revolution will see significant success during 2017.

“Adoption of other technology in the home is accelerating the trend towards smart technology within the fenestration industry. At Carl F Groupco, we have seen record sales of the FUHR multitronic 881 under the SmartSecure brand and we anticipate that this will increase as fabricators look to differentiate their offer and end users become increasingly aware of their options.

“Specialist sectors, such as housing associations, buildings for the elderly and schools, have shown interest where there is a specific need for this type of technology and there are clear signs that these will be sectors that will be at the forefront of its adoption during the next year.”

SmartSecure from Carl F Groupco, part of the technology trend
SmartSecure from Carl F Groupco, part of the technology trend

Mainstream milestones

Carl F Groupco is at pains to point out that smart technology isn’t set to totally overshadow advancements in mainstream hardware in the year ahead. Commenting on the manufacturers investing in R&D, Clare Crockett says:

“Trojan, for example, has shown a lot of innovation over the past year and their advancements are set to continue to influence the market. One particularly exciting initiative has been the launch of Trojan’s PAS 24 compatible Athena Euro Hinge. Key benefits are the fitting time – it is supplied pre-assembled and can go from the box onto the profile with very little preparation. Aesthetics continue to be advanced and the hinge, which benefits from an unobtrusive appearance, can be matched to any RAL colour to improve the overall appearance of the door. Trojan’s Elite range of pull handles and central knob are also new products to be included in our new catalogue for 2017 that will be launched in January.”

Raising standards

Aside from technology and product developments, Clare Crockett explains that some evolving standards are set to impact the hardware industry.

“Security is the main trend that will roll into 2017 following Document Q, moving on to TS 008 for letterplate security. All items on the door are now being scrutinised… at Carl F Groupco we see this is a positive trend to ensure innovation and product improvement for the future of the market.
“TS 008 relates to enhanced security for letterplates to prevent key fishing and manipulation; to achieve PAS 24 compliance and meet the requirements for Document Q, doorsets featuring letterplates must now pass
TS 008:2015.”

The Brexit effect

And, of course, no viewpoint regarding the year ahead can avoid the tricky topic of Brexit. Commenting on the challenges, Clare Crockett says:

“We sincerely hope that the mist will clear and that in 2017 some of the uncertainties will be clarified. Theresa May has admitted that she has lost sleep over Brexit and she is not alone… as most hardware is produced in Europe or the Far East,  it is highly likely that the UK’s hardware sector will continue to be challenged by currency fluctuations. All we can do is to continue to remain honest with customers, focus on quality products, provide high level service and offer rapid response delivery during the year ahead… and to prepare ourselves for the Brexit effect.”

Carl F Groupco: The demographics of distribution

Carl F Groupco: The demographics of distribution

An article written for Windows Active, September 2016.

In this article, Carl F Groupco highlights the importance of considering demographics, such as an ageing population, when developing a hardware range. The importance of this topic has been reinforced with conferences such as ‘Neighbourhoods of the Future’ which was attended by Windows Active and  Carl F Groupco and addressed issues including smart homes, new financing models and urban retrofitting.

Carl F Groupco is responding an ageing population with SmartSecure
Carl F Groupco is responding to developing demographics with SmartSecure

The evidence of an ageing population is confirmed by statistics that show an increase in life expectancy in the EU. In 1990, the average length of life was 74.1 years. By 2012, our life expectancy had increased significantly to 79.2 years. By 2025 it is estimated that more than 20% of the European population will be 65 years old, or above.

Developing Demographics

Cities need to adjust, architects need to plan and they need to be supported by a fenestration industry that provides products that support this developing demographic.

Responding to this trend, established distributor Carl F Groupco has looked at what the hardware industry can do to enable people to live independently in their homes for longer. Heavy investment in R&D has ensured that the company has its finger on the pulse of developing trends and Smart technology has been identified as a key element in the hardware supplier’s armoury to support developing demographics.

Launched at this year’s FIT Show, SmartSecure from Carl F Groupco is a state-of-the-art solution for electronic door locking and Smart access control. And, while it was breaking news, the solution can be used with confidence – it has established FUHR technology at its heart, it is fully tested and it is proven in operation.

Home security and access issues have been identified by the company as extremely important for older people. As a result, SmartSecure is designed to make life easier for all age groups including the elderly, and to give peace of mind to carers.

Smart access technologies within the range include ‘SmartConnect easy’, an app based access control and ‘SmartTouch comfort’, pioneering access control technology which means that, with an active transponder about your person e.g.  in your pocket, the door can be opened simply by moving towards it and gently touching a sensor.

Importantly, the FUHR multitronic 881 automatically locks all security points by a patented twin drive motor, securely and reliably in just seconds after closing giving absolute assurance that the door has been locked – this is particularly helpful for people who struggle to find their keys, or those who find it difficult to lift a lever to engage locking points. It also means increased protection is provided.

Peace of mind is also afforded as door locking status can be checked at any time. An illuminated light on the inside of the door indicates that the lock is engaged and locking status can be checked using building management systems.  Sensor monitoring of door leaf and locking status is also available with the ‘SmartConnect easy’ app which means that carers or relatives can check to see if the door is secure.

As well as radio key fobs supplied as standard, additional SmartSecure radio-based access control systems are also available. With a strong security benefit, a radio fingerprint scanner provides keyless biometric access control. A radio keypad allows users to open doors with an individually-selectable 4 to 8 digit code and it is compatible with most access controls.

Housing association feedback has included comments that elderly people can be overly trusting, or may forget to lift a traditional lever handle compromising their security and the lifespan of the door. Both issues are addressed with SmartSecure technology.

Simplicity and Sophistication

Any concern that high levels of sophistication bring complications in use are countered by Carl F Groupco who recognise that simplicity is key to success. Commenting, Carl F Groupco’s SmartSecure Business Development Manager Phil Rice said:

“To be truly effective, particularly for older users, Smart access control and locking technology has to be easy-to-use, totally reliable and secure. These requirements have been addressed by SmartSecure – the fob is as intuitive to use as car technology and the FUHR 881 multitronic fully motorised multipoint mechanism has received continued investment over the last decade to ensure that it is a highly advanced, robust solution that can be adopted with total confidence.”

An ageing population is a very real fact of our future and Carl F Groupco is one company that believes in investing in solutions that support this rising trend.

Carl F Groupco advises that, in the constant evolution of the hardware catalogue, the distributor should provide both staple lines and support emerging trends.  As such, it is essential that our ageing population is not overlooked and its needs are comprehensively addressed by the hardware sector.

SmartSecure, an electronic door locking and smart access control brand launched by Carl F Groupco, incorporates state-of-the-art technology which provides strong security and safety features. With aesthetic, practical and technical benefits, the solution is designed to have widespread appeal for architectural, construction and building management professionals across wide-ranging installations including housing associations, the growing retirement-living sector and care homes.

Access Control
The ’SmartConnect easy’ app based access control, one of the innovative packages available as a SmartSecure option.

Commenting on the capabilities of SmartSecure, the latest addition to the hardware distributor’s offer, Phil Rice, Business Development Manager for SmartSecure said:

“The FUHR multitronic 881 locking technology at the heart of the solution automatically locks all points securely and reliably by a patented twin motor in just seconds after closing the door… this ensures effective locking and increased protection. Feedback from housing associations has told us that some elderly people can be overly trusting, or they may forget to lift a lever handle – which is a requirement of conventional multipoint door locks: these issues are addressed with SmartSecure technology.

“All components can be concealed, which reduces the risk of tampering and, for total flexibility, the system can be integrated with existing access control or building management systems.”

Carl F Groupco’s trademark service, including comprehensive technical support, underpins the new SmartSecure brand. Fully trained specialists are on hand to advise.

Hardware Smartens Up

Key components of SmartSecure provide a straightforward, sophisticated door locking solution.
Key components of SmartSecure provide a straightforward, sophisticated door locking solution.

Carl F Groupco’s SmartSecure electronic door locking and smart access control brand captured the market’s attention at the FIT Show. Offering state-of-the-art technology, energy conservation advantages and comprehensive security features, the company’s on-stand demonstrations gave visitors the chance to sample the solution, which is compatible with virtually any access control. As a result, it has become a hot topic for hardware.

The traditional key is replaced by a radio key fob that is used to operate up to four different entrances such as front door, back door, garage door, and driveway entrance. ‘SmartConnect easy’, which allows convenient door opening and monitoring using a smart device, was a particularly popular attraction at the FIT Show.

‘SmartTouch comfort’ is also available which operates simply by touching a sensor when holding an active transponder. A radio fingerprint scanner, keypad and transponder are other available options.

Incorporated into the SmartSecure offering is the FUHR multitronic 881 fully motorised lock that has been continuously developed by its German manufacturer over its ten year history: unique patented features such as wireless power transfer between sash and frame to prevent cable damage and a dual motor for powered locking and unlocking sets this product apart from competitors.

In this report, Phil Rice – Carl F Groupco’s Business Development Manager for SmartSecure provides the answers that confirm that smart door locking and access control is not a flash in the pan for the fittings industry, it is a highly capable technology with wide ranging advantages which can easily be adopted to suit any door style.

Q: Is the access control technology proven?

A: Yes the rolling code radio technology that is central to SmartSecure has long been adopted by car manufacturers and WLAN ‘Smart’ technology, that has been used in homes for many years, is a tried and tested solution.

Q: Are the door lock and access control components complicated to install?

A: The solution provided by SmartSecure is easy to install and comprehensive assistance is available throughout the process. The lock requires just four additional routings compared to a standard multipoint lock, this allows the transformer and cabling to be fully concealed into the frame. If any assistance is needed, we are on hand to support – as with all our hardware products, comprehensive service and technical assistance is readily available.

Q: What if the power glitches?

A: The lock is designed to be fail secure from the outside and fail safe from the inside. In the event of a power failure you can always get into the building with a mechanical key and always leave safely using a lever handle – this provides the best of both worlds.

Q: What if I lose my fob?

A: The control unit on the 881 can be reset. Lost fobs will no longer work and replacement fobs can be programmed onto the control unit. This is a major advancement over the traditional key.

Q: How difficult is it to set up biometric recognition and is it very time consuming to do this?

A: It is not difficult at all to set this up, despite the advanced nature of the solution it is a simple process. We provide installation manuals for all SmartSecure’s access control solutions backed by technical support if required. A family of four people can be programmed into the scanner within around just 5 – 10 minutes.

Q: What if I forgot my code?

A: You will always be able to get into your home with your mechanical override key and, once you are in, you can re-program the keypad to a new code.

Q: Does ‘SmartConnect easy’ have access rights?

A: With SmartConnect easy you can manage multiple users and allocate specific times that they can enter. The system also logs an audit trail to report on who accesses the property at what time.

Q: Can I integrate intercom systems?

A: Yes, multiple third party products can be integrated into the 881 SmartSecure solution. For example, Intercoms, fire alarms systems and door operators, as well as other products, can be plugged directly into the control unit and work with the lock. Not only that, you can also integrate other access control solutions to operate the door lock – we haven’t found one yet that isn’t compatible.

SmartSecure is a sophisticated, well researched new generation door locking and access control solution – if readers have any further questions, they can contact Carl F Groupco directly who will be happy to provide the answers.

SmartSecure from Carl F Groupco: the new generation in electronic door locking and smart access control

No safety and security feature for the window and door industry would be complete without the inclusion of SmartSecure, the high profile brand launched by established hardware distributor Carl F Groupco at this year’s FIT Show. Providing a state-of-the-art solution for electronic door locking and smart access control, SmartSecure captured the market’s attention at its premier. And, as Carl F Groupco illustrated to hundreds of people with its on-stand demonstrations, the technology is proven in operation, fully tested and taking centre stage as a leading new generation lock and control solution.

SmartSecure – the state-of-the-art electronic door locking and smart access control from Carl F Groupco.
SmartSecure – the state-of-the-art electronic door locking and smart access control from Carl F Groupco.

As Carl F Groupco said at the FIT Show:

“If companies want to secure their place in the smart revolution with a brand they can use with confidence, they should look no further than SmartSecure.”

The traditional key is replaced with a range of access control options – the radio fob, supplied as standard, can operate up to four different entrances.  ‘SmartConnect easy’, a USP for the new brand, enables easy door opening and activity monitoring using a smart device. ‘SmartTouch comfort’ is also available – this simple to use variant operated by an active transponder and a sensor provides keyless opening. Other options are a radio fingerprint scanner using advanced biometrics, keypad and transponder. The door lock from SmartSecure is particularly attractive as it is compatible with virtually any access control solution.

Sophisticated smart technology

Featuring the FUHR 881 multitronic fully motorised multipoint mechanism, which has received continued investment over the last decade, customers are assured of the most sophisticated locking capabilities, combined with latest smart technology, to offer a highly advanced solution.

Throughout FUHR’s 150 year history, which includes a long-standing partnership with Carl F Groupco, the company has earned a well-deserved reputation for progressive thinking backed by strong direction, investment and R&D. The product range includes some of the most advanced door locking solutions – the multitronic is the flagship line in FUHR’s latest generation innovations.

As one of the leading players in the UK’s hardware supply sector, Carl F Groupco also has a strong reputation for innovation, which has been reinforced with the introduction of the cutting-edge SmartSecure package. And, with an excellent reputation for highly responsive and comprehensive technical support, no company understands better the importance of safety and security when it comes to hardware.

Strong security and safety benefits

With strong security and safety benefits, the wide ranging appeal of SmartSecure includes housing associations, the growing retirement living sector and care homes. Advantages include the fact that doors are automatically locked on closing, which means that occupants are always secure.

Carl F Groupco advises that housing association feedback includes comments that elderly people can be overly trusting, or may forget to lift a traditional lever handle. Both issues are addressed with SmartSecure technology. The system’s flexibility also ensures that all components can be concealed, which reduces the risk of tampering.

Phil Rice, Carl F Groupco’s Business Development Manager for SmartSecure expands on the security and safety enhancements offered by SmartSecure:

“There are a number of ways in which SmartSecure provides security advantages. Importantly, the FUHR multitronic 881 locking technology at the heart of the solution automatically locks all points securely and reliably by a patented twin motor in just seconds after closing the door… this means there are no nagging doubts as to whether a door has been locked and increased protection against unwanted intruders is afforded. The multitronic 881 automatically locks the door to a maximum level of security, which avoids human error and enables the door locking status to be checked at any time.

“For visual confirmation that the lock is engaged, an illuminated light on the inside of the door is one indicator.  Locking status can also be identified, if required, using building management systems or bus systems connected to modern building services.

“Sensor monitoring of door leaf and bolt position is also available with the ‘SmartConnect easy’ app: this means that if locking status verification and reliable display is required it can be given from any location, whenever needed.”

Smart, straightforward and stylish

Carl F Groupco stresses that smart locking technology is here to stay and the early adopters will be the companies that set themselves apart. For the very latest locking technology that is not only the ultimate in safety and security but also simple to fit, extremely stylish and a true differentiator for any organisation, Carl F Groupco can provide further details and demonstrations. The company’s technical experts are also on hand to answer any questions.

SmartSecure from Carl F Groupco: state-of-the-art access control

SmartSecure from Carl F Groupco: state-of-the-art access control

In this report for The Fabricator, Phil Rice, Business Development Manager for SmartSecure – Carl F Groupco’s new smart door locking and access control brand, confirms the high levels of security afforded by the new generation keyless technology.

Phil Rice, Carl F Groupco SmartSecure Business Development Manager
Phil Rice, Carl F Groupco SmartSecure Business Development Manager

“For hundreds of years people have turned keys to secure their locks and, as a result, this process has been deeply ingrained in our psyche.  However, our attitudes, and confidence in, keyless technology has come on leaps and bounds with the proven abilities of smart systems for cars.

Today, very few people use a traditional key to open their car doors or start their engines and use of a fob has become second nature. The electronic evolution is now gathering pace in the UK’s door industry with widespread recognition of its convenience, energy conservation and enhanced security benefits.

There are a number of ways in which SmartSecure provides security advantages. Importantly, the FUHR multitronic 881 locking technology that is at the heart of the solution automatically locks all points by a patented twin motor, securely and reliably in just seconds after closing the door… this means there are no nagging doubts as to whether a door has been locked and increased protection against intruders is afforded. Additionally, the multitronic 881 automatically locks the door to a maximum level of security which avoids human errors and enables the door locking status to be checked at any time.

An illuminated light on the inside of the door is not the only indicator that the lock is engaged, locking status can also be identified via bus systems connected to modern building services, or building management systems if required. Sensor monitoring of door leaf and bolt position is also available with the ‘SmartConnect easy’ app based control, this means locking status verification and reliable display can be provided at any time, from any location.

State-of-the-art Security

The all-inclusive SmartSecure multitronic 881 kit includes harmonised lock, patented twin motorised drive mechanism, concealed transformer, wireless power transfer between frame and sash and full range of accessory components. Pre-assembled plug-in connectors ensure easy mounting.

As well as radio key fobs supplied as standard, additional SmartSecure radio-based access control systems are available to meet consumer demand for state-of-the-art solutions. With a strong security benefit, a radio fingerprint scanner provides keyless biometric access control with 2-channel opening technology. A radio keypad allows users to open doors with two individually-selectable 4 to 8 digit codes and a radio transponder reader option enables easy, and secure, door opening.

Smart access technologies within the range are  ‘SmartConnect easy’, an app based access control as previously mentioned. In addition to this, ‘SmartTouch comfort’ is pioneering access control technology designed to make life more convenient for users of the multitronic 881. All you need is an active transponder in your pocket – you can then open the door just by moving towards it and gently touching a sensor. All these variants were demonstrated at the FIT Show drawing large numbers of people to the Carl F Groupco stand.

The reliability of the multitronic 881 has been independently verified. Numerous tests have confirmed a consistently high locking force. Depending on the lock type, system tests can be carried out to EN 1627 class 4 resistance. Add to this the fact that the lock mechanics have been tested to 200,000 cycles and the patented twin motor has been tested to 500,000 cycles, and the result is a smart locking solution that offers the highest levels of security.”

A Smart Idea

A Smart Idea

The launch of a new brand by Carl F Groupco is reported as the company’s most significant development in the company’s 50+ year history. Designed to support emerging Smart Access Control applications, SmartSecure is a new division for the hardware supplier that focusses on motorised multipoint locking for all applications. In a move that will position the company at the forefront of new generation home automation technology, SmartSecure offers Carl F Groupco’s trademark partnership service and comprehensive technical support.Pic - Carl F Groupco_SmartSecure_Carlia

At the heart of the new SmartSecure brand is the FUHR multitronic 881. Backed by the German lock manufacturer’s advanced R&D, the locking solution offers the assurance of an established product with the appeal of cutting-edge technology.

When asked why Carl F Groupco had chosen this moment in time to invest heavily in establishing the SmartSecure brand, Managing Director John Crittenden said:

“Based on our long-standing partnership with FUHR we have offered the 881 for over a decade. As the market moves towards smart home technology, we are extending our support for the locking solution. To clarify, we aren’t trying to create a FUHR smart home; we are offering an advanced locking system that is compatible with the range of smart technology.

Some significant household brands are investing heavily in mass media consumer campaigns and this is driving market interest in home automation. While locks are not a particularly visible part of the smart message, they play a very important role and we have chosen this point in time to invest further in this sector to ensure we are part of the market from the outset.

If we draw parallels with the automation industry, the smart car has become the standard – if you buy a new vehicle today you expect a smart key but the “Key-less Go” brand was only introduced to the car market in 1998. Our confidence in the uptake of new locking technology is reinforced by the fact that the 881 is already well established in the European market, particularly in Germany where home owners have long recognised its value in terms of protection, aesthetics and state-of-the-art technology.

An exciting new era

We are living in a technological age and locking solutions have their part to play. It is a significant opportunity and we are seizing the moment because we have a strong track record with FUHR and we are a technology led, service focussed supplier organisation. As such, we are taking smart locking forward to drive the UK market which will put our customers in the strongest position to be at the leading edge of this exciting new era of automation.

While regulatory demands aren’t at the heart of the timing of the launch of the new SmartSecure brand, the EcoHomes environmental rating scheme has put new build developers under pressure to create energy efficient homes and the environmental message is one of the benefits of the FUHR 881.

At the moment you can count the number of smart locks on the market on one hand and we are on the cusp of something very big. The market has huge potential and our expertise, experience and brand values place us in a very strong position. Support has always been at the core of our offer and, as a technical solution, this will be imperative for this sector – to provide comprehensive service we have established a separate division and all our staff will be fully trained in the technology. Partnerships are also central to our customer relationship philosophy and these are critical for smart locking as a number of platforms need to integrate and communicate effectively.

It is not possible to over play our commitment to SmartSecure…the investment is significant: this is so much more than a brochure and a web presence; it is a fully supported brand. The smart home evolution offers probably the biggest potential for expansion in our industry – the time is ripe to take this opportunity and, with the backing of FUHR, we are well placed to be one of the pioneering companies.”

The all-inclusive SmartSecure multitronic 881 kit includes harmonised lock, patented twin motorised drive mechanism, concealed transformer, wireless power transfer between frame and sash and full range of accessory components. Pre-assembled plug-in connectors ensure easy mounting. Optional radio access control systems include SmartConnect easy, which offers a major differentiating USP, for convenient door opening using a smartphone; SmartTouch comfort access system for keyless access; radio fingerprint scanner for keyless biometric control; radio keypad – a keyless access control system and radio transponder reader.
